When it comes to Merkel Cell Carcinoma it is important to get the correct diagnosis and treatment. This is because if not treated correctly then the cancer can continue to spread through the body. For this reason the early signs and symptoms of this condition can sometimes be overlooked, leading to a more rapid progression of the cancer.
In the early stages of this condition, it may be difficult to diagnose accurately. A variety of tests may be carried out, depending on the type of cancerous cells present and how far they have progressed. The most common tests are to look for any changes in the lymph nodes, skin and bone tissue. All of these tests are commonly used to diagnose Merkel Cell Carcinoma, and to find out its stage (how advanced the cancer is).
If you have had any symptoms such as fever, weight loss, fatigue and/or any other unexplained loss of fluids then you should seek medical attention straight away, even if you think that Merkel Cell Carcinoma has been caused by something else. These symptoms may indicate that you do have this disease and need treatment.
If you have had a blood test to confirm whether your cancer has spread, then you should be able to discuss the details of that test with your doctor
This will help him or her to determine if it is possible that the cancer has spread to other parts of your body. This will allow you to be able to take some form of action to stop the cancer from spreading.
Any changes in bone density such as swelling, or pain and stiffness is also a sign of Merkel Cell Carcinoma. It may be possible to treat this condition using surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of both.
If cancer has spread to your lymph nodes, then your doctor may be able to remove them to check for any abnormalities, or if you have had surgery to remove any lymph nodes then he or she may also be able to do this to help your recovery.
